🎵 Aeolian Harmonica Lesson – Natural Minor / Modal Playing
In this video, we explore the sound of the Aeolian mode on harmonica.
Aeolian is the natural minor scale – dark, emotional and one of the most familiar minor sounds in Western music.
But as always in this series, the goal is not to just run another scale up and down.
It’s about hearing the mode, feeling its atmosphere, and learning how to turn that sound into actual musical ideas on the harmonica.
The flat 6th is especially important. Together with the flat 3rd and flat 7th, it gives Aeolian its characteristic natural minor color.

🎵 The Chicken Harmonica Lesson – 11th Position on a C Harp
In this video, we explore The Chicken in B♭ on a C harmonica.
The obvious choice would be an E♭ harmonica in 2nd position. Instead, we use 11th position – a surprisingly bluesy and practical way to approach the tune.
This arrangement was inspired by our encore with the Sirius Harmonica Ensemble from Taiwan at the Seoul International Harmonica Festival.
The progression includes D7, G7 and C7 – the same dominant chords we already know from playing a regular 12-bar blues in G on a C harp. That makes several parts of the tune feel familiar and gives us a strong foundation for improvisation.
